ORIGIN STORY
From industrial steel leftovers to a bench with a story: let us present Rover's Scrap Bench!
The Story
The Scrap Bench was born from a simple question: why do we continue producing new materials while valuable ones are discarded every day?
Designed by Tom De Koninck for ROVER, the bench transforms industrial steel offcuts into a durable piece of furniture with a distinctive identity. Instead of melting production leftovers down, ROVER preserves their existing character, allowing the material's industrial past to remain visible.
The seat is made from perforated sheet metal offcuts collected from local manufacturers. Rather than hiding these remnants, the original perforation pattern becomes one of the bench's defining design features, making every piece subtly unique while revealing traces of the material's previous life. The frame is welded from reclaimed reinforcing steel bars, creating a robust structure that complements the industrial character of the seat.
Suitable for both indoor and outdoor environments, the Scrap Bench is available in a colour of the client's choice, making it equally at home in hospitality projects, retail spaces, offices and residential settings.
More than a functional bench, it demonstrates how overlooked industrial leftovers can become contemporary furniture with a meaningful story and a lasting identity.

The Upcycling Process
Collecting reinforcing steel bars and perforated sheet metal offcuts from local industrial manufacturers.
Selecting and preparing the reclaimed materials instead of melting them down.
Welding reclaimed reinforcing steel into a strong supporting frame.
Cutting and fitting the perforated steel offcuts to create the seat.
Hot-dip galvanising the frame for long-term corrosion protection.
Applying a durable powder coating in a custom RAL colour.
Assembling and finishing every bench locally in Belgium in collaboration with social economy partners.
The result is a durable bench that preserves the character of industrial leftovers while giving them a meaningful second life. By keeping materials in their existing form rather than recycling them into new raw material, the Scrap Bench significantly reduces energy use while demonstrating how local waste streams can become contemporary furniture with a distinctive identity-ready for future contexts, repairs, reuse and new stories.
